Swiss youngster Thomas Lüthi posted the best time in the first free practice session this morning at Sachsenring, clocking the fastest of his 21 laps in 1'29.119. The Elit Grand Prix Honda rider edged KTM's Mika Kallio by only 0.050s, while third-placed Fabrizio Lai finished the session 0.569s adrift.

Spaniard Sergio Gadea was the fastest Aprilia rider in this session with fourth, ahead of Derbi's Pablo Nieto and former World Champion Manuel Poggiali, on the Gilera.

Donington debut winner Julian Simon was eighth fastest, finishing the session in the trail of his Red Bull KTM team-mate Gabor Talmacsi. Jordi Carchano and Mattia Pasini completed the top 10.
