Rossi and Gibernau clear leaders of the BMW Award

The BMW Awards could turn out to be a two-horse race when the season resumes later this month at Brno, with Valentino Rossi and Sete Gibernau 3s clear of third-placed Marco Melandri.

After managing to maintain leadership of the BMW Awards throughout most of the first half of the MotoGP 2005 season, Gibernau had finally lost his first place position in the classification to archrival Rossi at Laguna Seca.

Since then, the Italian built up a 0.278s advantage over Gibernau, who still has seven races to fight back. Last year, Rossi won the BMW Award being only 0.963 seconds of the Spaniard.

The fight for third position in this special classification - based on the accumulated qualifying times over the course of the year – also looks wide open as Nicky Hayden's recent form saw the American coming back just 0.176 adrift from Melandri.
