Biaggi causes the big surprise at Brno

Repsol Honda's Max Biaggi rode one of the best races of the season to take a valiant third place that moves him to second place in championship, overtaking compatriot Marco Melandri.

Biaggi had endured a torrid weekend at the circuit where he has enjoyed so much success in the past with seven victories. The 34-year-old Italian did make significant progress over the course of the weekend, but not as much as he would have liked and finally qualified in tenth place on the grid.

In the race he escaped trouble at the first corner when he saved a massive slide and ended the first lap in 11th place. As has so often been the case this season, he overcame the problems and caught and passed Hofmann, Roberts, Checa, Edwards and on lap 16 of 22 overtook Melandri to move into sixth. He then battled past team-mate Hayden on the penultimate lap and then Barros on the last lap. When Gibernau's bike faltered in the dying stages Biaggi ultimately crossed the finish line in third behind race winner Rossi and second-placed man Capirossi.

`That is an amazing result and one that makes me very happy for both myself and for all my team. It has been a very hard weekend and I knew that the race would be difficult starting from the fourth row. The start was not so bad, but I was hit in turn one when it was all very close and had a very big slide in fourth gear. I composed myself and tried to get the tyres to warm up – especially the left side where we had troubles all weekend,´ explained the Italian rider.

`After a few laps I could see that I could make progress – little by little - and that it was possible to move up the field. I started to believe I could move forward and I did. We got the best possible result from our position and I hope this is the start of a more positive part of the season for me. Of course it has not been easy so far. We will test here for the next two days and I am very much looking forward to the next races with renewed confidence.'

The Repsol Honda team are staying on at the circuit for the next two days, with several other MotoGP teams, to test a new machine prior to leaving for Japan in three weeks' time for the first of the six remaining races of the season.
