Hiroshi Aoyama posted the best time of the first qualifying session at Motegi to clinch provisional pole position. The Japanese rider produced a fastest lap of 1'52.556 to edge out Alex de Angelis by 0.177s.

De Angelis was closely followed by Aoyama's younger brother Shuhei, entered as a wildcard for his second GP appearance in the 250cc class, while Andrea Dovizioso completed the top 4.

The second row of the provisional grid is formed by Sebastian Porto, Jorge Lorenzo, Casey Stoner and Yuki Takahashi. Sylvain Guintoli was the top privateer rider with the ninth fastest time, while Hector Barbera rounded off the top 10.

Aussie Anthony West was 11th on the KTM and Briton Chaz Davies came home 21st fastest. Championship leader Dani Pedrosa, who damaged his left wrist and back after a tumble in the morning session, was only 14th after suffering another crash in the afternoon.
