Kallio dominates first qualifying session

Red Bull KTM's Mika Kallio clinched provisional pole position in the 125cc class at Motegi, ahead of Marco Simoncelli and Manuel Poggiali.

Championship leader Thomas Lüthi was fastest in the early stages of the qualifying session before KTM's riders took over. First it was Gabor Talmacsi topping the timesheets, then team-mate Kallio. The Flying Finn improved his lap times consistently to finish with a best of time of 1'59.137.

Behind Kallio, Simoncelli moved from tenth to second on his last lap, relegating former World Champion Poggiali to third. Mattia Pasini was fourth fastest while Talmacsi secured the first spot of the second row with the fifth fastest time, ahead of Hector Faubel, Fabrizio Lai and Tomoyoshi Koyama.

Alvaro Bautista and Thomas Lüthi completed the top 10, as the Swiss youngster was unable to break the 2' barrier and finished 1.1s adrift of Kallio.
