Fortuna Honda's Jorge Lorenzo dominated the first free practice of the 250cc Grand Prix of Japan by posting a best lap of 1'53.223, some 0.145s faster than factory colleague Hiroshi Aoyama.

Alex de Angelis was the best Aprilia rider of the session with the third quickest time, just ahead of Sebastian Porto. Hiroshi Aoyama's brother Shuhei posted the fifth fastest time, ahead of Aussie Casey Stoner and local hero Yuki Takahashi.

Andrea Dovizioso, who won at Motegi last year on his way to the 125cc title, was eight fastest this morning, ahead of Hector Barbera and defending 250cc champion Dani Pedros - who completed just 13 laps before suffering a crash. The Spaniard escaped serious injury but had to undergo treatment at the Clinica Mobile as he sustained damage to his left wrist and back.
