Tamada wants more after first podium

Makoto Tamada grabbed his first podium of the season with the Konica Minolta Honda team at his home Grand Prix at Motegi on Sunday. The Japanese rider has endured a disappointing season, blighted by a nagging wrist injury he picked up early on. In addition, his move to Michelin tyres hasn't produced the results expected, but, after finally getting back on to the podium, he insists he is now ready for more.

"It's my best result of the season but I feel I can do even more," said Tamada. "I am only at 70 per cent in terms of fitness and I hope that soon I'll be able improve. Finally, I've had the opportunity to show off my new Michelin cap as this is my first podium with the French tyres!"

"During the race I had some chattering problems which didn't allow me to stay with the leaders. I tried, but when I saw Rossi and Melandri going out, I decided not to risk crashing and stayed back in third. Marco risked going off the track on some earlier laps, so I left him some space so I didn't get involved in a collision. In the end, I think I made the right choice. When he was in front of me, Rossi was going really fast, but I noticed that he didn't look as secure as usual."

"I am happy with this result, most of all because we obtained it in front of our title sponsor, Konica Minolta, who have never stopped supporting and believing in me this year. I hope to be able repeat this performance in seven days, because we are on the right track."
