De Angelis fastest in first qualifying session

Alex de Angelis took provisional pole position in the first qualifying session of the Marlboro Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix today at Sepang. The San Marinese rider posted his fastest lap on his last attempt as track got easier throughout the session.

Honda's Andrea Dovizioso was second fastest, 0.754s adrift of de Angelis. Third quickest was Australian Casey Stoner, followed by Sebastian Porto. Last week's race winner Hiroshi Aoyama heads the second row of the provisional grid with the fifth fastest time, ahead of Randy de Puniet.

Defending World Champion and current series leader Dani Pedrosa was seventh in front of compatriot Alex Debon, who was the top privateer rider of the session. De Angelis's team-mate Simone Corsi was ninth ahead of Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli. Red Bull KTM's Anthony West was 15th, while Briton Chaz Davies finished the session in 19th.
