Lorenzo back with a bang

Jorge Lorenzo made a stylish comeback after serving his one-race ban, taking provisional pole position in the first qualifying session of the Marlboro Grand Prix of Qatar. The Spanish youngster, who had been sanctioned after colliding with Alex de Angelis at Motegi, posted a best lap of 2'03.727 to snatch the provisional top spot from his great nemesis, Dani Pedrosa.

Sebastian Porto, winner of the inaugural Qatari GP in 2004, was third fastest and also the last rider to dip under 2'04 mark. The Argentinean completed the session ahead of his Aprilia factory colleagues Alex de Angelis and Casey Stoner, while Lorenzo's team-mate Hector Barbera was sixth.

Randy de Puniet and Andrea Dovizioso secured the two last spots on the second row of the provisional grid and the top 10 was completed by Hiroshi Aoyama and Mirko Giansanti.

Red Bull KTM's Anthony West was only 20th, while Briton Chaz Davies took the flag two places further adrift of the Australian.
