Elias not satisfied despite best result

Bothered by the wrist injury he sustained earlier this season at Le Mans in the last few races, Toni Elias was back on top form last week at Losail. The tough rookie clinched his best result of the year at the Qatari venue, taking eighth on his Yamaha YZR-M1.

The Catalan rider shone from the first day of free practice, posting the second fastest time on day 1, before securing the ninth spot on the grid in qualifying. A steady race saw him racing against the likes of Shinya Nakano and Alex Barros to take his best ever MotoGP finish. However, the Fortuna Yamaha rider is not ready to bask in self-satisfaction and has instead decided to point out the issues he has to address with the team so he can aim higher.

"I'm not satisfied - this weekend has been good, because we got off to a good start, but there's a moment where all the others progress more than I do," said Elias, who is currently 15th overall with 51 points. "We need to watch out for this; at the start of the race it's hard for me with a full tank, and we need to find a better set-up. When the tank empties, I can start to go quicker and catch up those ahead, but it's already too late. Gradually I think we'll get it sorted though."

Fortuna Yamaha team director Hervé Poncharal was pleased by this result, but also by the attitude of his rider.
"Toni is never happy and that's a good thing," said the Frenchman. "But it has been a great weekend for him. All the weekend he felt good with the bike at this track, and was quick from the first free practice. We weren't lucky with a few technical problems during qualifying, but 9th on the grid isn't too bad. As for the race, in the first half he found it hard to keep up the pace with the full tank, but in the latter stages he rode fantastically. It's without a doubt his best race. If we continue like this in the next races, we will get better results."
