KTM take over at top of 125 tree

125cc Manufacturers' World Championship leader KTM is on the brink of putting an end to Honda and Aprilia's two decades of supremacy in the minor class with the Austrian machines enjoying a 39 point lead over the Japanese and Italian factories with only three rounds to go.

Since 1988 and Spanish manufacturer Derbi's last title, Honda and Aprilia have shared the honours in the 125cc class. Honda have taken a total of eleven manufacturers' titles since 1988, while Aprilia have managed five.

But with KTM having reached their full potential in their third season of Grand Prix racing, the long-lived duel between Honda and Aprilia has almost been relegated to a different era as KTM is the only brand to have scored podium finishes in every round held so far this year. Honda have twice failed to secure a podium finish this term, at Catalunya and Assen, while Aprilia have missed out once, at Donington Park.

KTM, with seven victories, also have more wins than Honda and Aprilia put together, as the Japanese and Italian factories have managed three each.
