Phillip Island 2004: Dovi takes Australian thriller

Having taken the world crown in Malaysia, 125 Champion Andrea Dovizioso scored his fifth win of the 2004 season at Phillip Island. The Kopron Team Scot rider took the chequered flag ahead of Derbi's Jorge Lorenzo and local hero Casey Stoner, aboard the KTM, after being involved in a three-way struggle with those two riders for most of the race.

Lorenzo and Stoner, who suffered a heavy crash in the warm-up, crossed the line with less than a thousand of a second between them, and a photo-finish was needed to determine the final outcome.

Roberto Locatelli proved unable to match the front-runners' pace, but fourth was good enough to allow him to maintain second in the Championship ahead of Hector Barbera. The young Spaniard fought alongside Steve Jenkner and Gino Borsoi and eventually took sixth behind the German.

French youngster Mike di Meglio ended up eighth behind team mate/team manager Gino Borsoi, but ahead of Alvaro Bautista and Sergio Gadea who completed the top ten.

While Dovizioso added another 25 points to his tally, Locatelli consolidated second position in the championship, although Lorenzo moved up to third just three points adrift of the Italian.
