Gibernau fastest in crash-strewn session

Movistar Honda Sete Gibernau clocked the fastest time on Friday morning at Phillip Island, where tricky track conditions provoked several serious crashes. The session was red-flagged when Loris Capirossi suffered a spectacular shunt while Kenny Roberts Jr will be sidelined for the rest of the weekend after sustaining a left wrist fracture.

Brazilian veteran Alex Barros was second fastest on the Camel Honda RC211V, completing the session just 0.168s off Gibernau. Carlos Checa was the fastest Ducati man on track having posted the third fastest time, ahead of World Champion Valentino Rossi and his Gauloises Yamaha team-mate Colin Edwards.

Marco Melandri and John Hopkins were sixth and seventh fastest respectively, followed by Repsol Honda riders Nicky Hayden and Max Biaggi. Capirossi, who won two of the last three rounds, posted the tenth fastest lap before crashing, sustaining contusions to the left side of the chest. Chris Vermeulen was 15th fastest on his first outing riding a RC211V for the Camel Honda team.
