Mattia Pasini clinched provisional pole in the 125cc class in Australia, posting a fastest lap of 1'38.665 at a chilly Phillip Island circuit.

The fiery Italian from the Totti Top Sport - NGS team demoted French youngster Mike di Meglio from top spot of the provisional grid by 0.163s. Aprilia privateer Angel Rodriguez was third fastest behind di Meglio, finishing the session ahead of the Frenchman's team-mate Fabrizio Lai by 0.1s

Thomas Lüthi, who currently holds second overall in championship just two points behind title rival Mika Kallio, was fifth fastest on his Elit GP Honda. Hungarian Gabor Talmacsi, the winner of the previous round held in Qatar, was sixth fastest while his Red Bull KTM team-mate Kallio struggled to a disappointing eighteenth spot.

Marco Simoncelli was seventh fastest ahead of Czech Lukas Pesek, while Spaniards Hector Faubel and Julian Simon completed the top 10.
