Spanish underdog Angel Rodriguez made the most of tricky conditions on the first day of the Polini Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island, qualifying on the first row of the provisional 125 grid by posting the third fastest time on Friday afternoon.

The Spaniard, who was dumped by the LG Galicia Mobile Team earlier this season, is having an impressive stint with the Hungary-based Team Toth, deputizing for injured Swiss rookie Vincent Braillard. Last time out in Qatar Rodriguez demonstrated his speed and potential by taking 8th on the grid.

After the qualifying session in Australia, he said: "I'm very happy as this is my best result so far. We found a really good set-up and I feel comfortable on the bike - I'm in pretty good shape for this weekend!"
