Lüthi grabs pole position

Title hopeful Thomas Lüthi clinched pole position this afternoon at Phillip Island in the final 125cc qualifying session. It was the fourth time this year that the Swiss youngster has secured first spot on the grid and, as he won the three previous races he started from pole, the Elit GP team rider will be aiming for a win which would see him regain the championship lead.

Mika Kallio, his title rival and current series leader by just two points, will head the second row of the grid as he was beaten to a place in the top four by Mattia Pasini, Gabor Talmacsi and Marco Simoncelli.

Pasini took provisional pole on Friday afternoon and looked strong again today, but failed to beat Lüthi's best time on his last run by just 0.161s. Qatari GP winner Talmacsi is the best placed KTM rider having posted the third fastest time ahead of Simoncelli, who was also on the podium a fortnight ago at Losail.

Behind Kallio, Tomy Koyama and Mike di Meglio qualified in sixth and seventh respectively, while Lukas Pesek posted the eighth quickest lap to secure the last spot of the second row. Fabrizio Lai and Joan Olive completed the top 10.
