Successful homecoming for Stoner

Casey Stoner will start from pole position at his home Grand Prix at Phillip Island after clocking the best time of the final qualifying session ahead of Jorge Lorenzo and Alex de Angelis.

Stoner, who will turn twenty on Sunday, will be aiming for his third consecutive win in a bid to close the gap on championship leader Dani Pedrosa, who was sixth fastest today.

Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo will be the only Honda rider on the front row as he posted the second fastest lap to qualify ahead of de Angelis and provisional pole setter Sebastian Porto. However, the Fortuna Honda rider walked unscathed from a violent crash at turn one just moments after posting his best lap.

His team-mate Hector Barbera ended in fifth position after failing to improve on his time from yesterday. Behind sixth-placed Pedrosa, Andrea Dovizioso and Hiroshi Aoayama complete the second row. Randy de Puniet and Roberto Locatelli took ninth and tenth respectively.
