Pedrosa secures 250cc title with photo-finish win

Dani Pedrosa secured his second consecutive 250cc World Championship crown by winning the Polini Australian Grand Prix after home favourite and title rival Casey Stoner was forced to retire in the early stages of the race.

After a blazing start from pole position, Stoner crashed out of the lead on lap 3 and, while he briefly rejoined the race, was forced to pull out because of the damage sustained by his Aprilia. Jorge Lorenzo then inherited the lead, but was soon demoted by Sebastian Porto.

The Argentine, who had won last year's race at Phillip Island, was tailed by Pedrosa for most of the race and looked good for a repeat win until he lost his momentum just before the final left-hander. Pedrosa was then able to slipstream him and snatch victory by only 0.027s.

Lorenzo completed the podium after riding a lonely race in third, while the tussle for fourth saw Hector Barbera taking the flag ahead of Andrea Dovizioso and Hiroshi Aoyama.

Randy de Puniet finished in seventh ahead of Roberto Locatelli, while privateers Alex Debon and Sylvain Guintoli completed the top 10.
