Runner-up battle becomes clearer in Turkey

The penultimate round of the 2005 MotoGP World Championship, held at the spectacular Istanbul Park circuit in Turkey, saw the fight for runner-up spot in the championship become a lot clearer with youngsters Marco Melandri and Nicky Hayden now the only realistic challengers to end the season as number two behind Valentino Rossi.

American rider Colin Edwards seems unlikely to complete the 1-2 the Gauloises Yamaha team had been hoping for as he now sits fourth overall, 24 points adrift of second-placed Melandri with only 25 points still up for grabs.

The Italian rider took an important step towards the runner-up spot by taking his first MotoGP victory in Turkey and is nine points ahead of Hayden, who took his third consecutive podium in Istanbul. A second place at Valencia would be good enough for Melandri to secure his objective regardless of the Repsol Honda rider's result.
