Lüthi closes on title dream

Elit Grand Prix Honda's Thomas Lüthi is just two points away from his first 125cc World Championship crown after extending his Championship lead over Mika Kallio following his fifth-place finish in Sunday's race at the Istanbul Park circuit.

That fifth was enough for the Swiss youngster to build up a 23 point advantage as his Finnish title rival, Mika Kallio, crashed out on the last lap of a 'really wild race' which saw a six-rider leading group swap positions all the way to the chequered flag.

"That was a really, really wild race - when I was leading the lap I was very comfortable on the bike, but when I was brought back into the group I was fighting really hard to keep my position," said Lüthi. "The bike was not as good as in practice in the first three gears, but the top speed was good. I made a mistake under breaking and went to the back of the group and from then on it was just too wild. When Mika (Kallio) crashed I missed him by millimetres. I tried my best to win the race but it was not to be for me."

Despite missing out on victory in Istanbul Luthi now heads to Valencia knowing that fourteenth place will be good enough to see him walk away with the title and appears all but certain to take his first world crwn.
