Gibernau closes on BMW Award

Sete Gibernau is still looking for his first Grand Prix win of the season after a hugely frustrating campaign, but the Spaniard should at least be rewarded for his qualifying speed as he currently holds a comfortable lead in the BMW Award – the 2005 Best Qualifier competition.

By clinching his fourth pole position of the year in Turkey, the Movistar Honda rider extended his lead over Valentino Rossi to almost two seconds which should be good enough for him to clinch the BMW prize this weekend at Valencia.

Gibernau has consistently been one of the fastest riders in the premier class this term and took the lead in the BMW Award standings at the second round of the season at Estoril. He has lost it only once since, when MotoGP returned to the United States. At Laguna Seca, Gibernau qualified in 13th, his lowest grid position of the year, but he fought back after the summer break taking pole position at Brno, Czech Republic. Since then, he has built up an ever-increasing gap over Rossi which now stands at 1.956s.

Behind Gibernau and Rossi, young guns Nicky Hayden and Marco Melandri are in contention for third as they are only separated by three tenths of a second.
