Jorge Lorenzo was the pacesetter in the first 250cc free practice at Valencia, going fastest with a lap of 1'36.828. The Fortuna Honda rider, who will have his last shot this weekend to become the youngest-ever 250cc GP winner, completed the session ahead of Aprilia factory riders Alex de Angelis – riding for the official team, and Randy de Puniet, who is set for his last appearance in Aspar Aprilia colours before graduating to MotoGP with Kawasaki next season.

Japanese rider Hiroshi Aoyama was fourth fastest, while his team-mate Dani Pedrosa took seventh following home Casey Stoner and Sebastian Porto. Local star Héctor Barberá was eight fastest ahead of Yuki Takahashi and Andrea Dovizioso, who crashed in the early stages of the session.

Other incidents saw Mirko Giansanti and Alex Debon crashing out, but all escaped unhurt.
