Gibernau on form ahead of qualifying

Movistar Honda rider Sete Gibernau topped the time sheet in the final free practice session ahead of this afternoon's qualifier at the Ricardo Tormo circuit, near Valencia. The Spaniard has beaten the circuit pole position record, set by Valentino Rossi in 2003, by 0.025s

Gibernau was followed by his Spanish compatriot Carlos Checa on the Ducati, while Yamaha's Valentino Rossi, who suffered front-end issues on the first day, improved by almost a second on his best time to move up to third position, ahead of Nicky Hayden.

On the second Movistar Honda RC211V, Marco Melandri, who had been the fastest rider on Friday, slipped back to fifth after failing to improve in this final free practice session, lapping just over a tenth of a second slower than his best time.

Colin Edwards and Makoto Tamada took sixth and seventh respectively, while Alex Hofmann posted the eighth fastest time ahead of Loris Capirossi and Ryuichi Kiyonari.
