Team Roberts plans Honda-powered prototype

While several MotoGP teams are back in action today at the Valencia circuit, Team Roberts are busy away from the track preparing their 2006 assault which could see the Banbury-based outfit field a Honda-powered prototype.

Team Roberts entered the 2005 MotoGP World Championship with a new bike powered by a V4 engine designed by KTM, but the Austrian manufacturer suddenly pulled out midway through the season and left the team with no other option than to race the 2004 Proton V5 at Brno and Valencia.

Team manager Chuck Aksland commented: "Honda have engines available to us and we are working on the design of the motorcycle now to incorporate them into our chassis. We are also working on securing the budget, but it's too early to confirm our line-up."

Various reports have claimed that 2000 World Champion Kenny Roberts Jr is likely to join the team as he is now a free agent having parted company with Suzuki at the end of the season. Aksland added: "Kenny Jr would be high on (their) list as a rider, but it is too early for (them) at this stage to confirm his participation."

Kenny Roberts Jr previously rode for the team founded by his father from 1996 to 1998 aboard, the first year on Yamaha and the following two on the innovative Modenas KR3.
