Spanish GP: Qualifying

Every week the Re-Live section will give you the opportunity to enjoy the highlights of the 17 Grands Prix of the 2005 MotoGP World Championship season. On Saturdays you'll find all the best action from the free practice and qualifying sessions, and on Sundays the best moments from the races. This week takes you back to the season opener held at Jerez in April.

After Sete Gibernau had dominated most of the free practice sessions, qualifying - with the new 'single session' format - saw Valentino Rossi set a stunning new lap record, clocking a time of 1'39.419 to overcome the challenge of local hero Gibernau and knock almost one and a half seconds off his previous record set in 2004.

Honda new boy Marco Melandri completed the front row on his first appearance on the RC211V, while Nicky Hayden headed the second row ahead of Kawasaki's Shinya Nakano and Ducati's Loris Capirossi.
