Gibernau and Stoner's heartbreaking blows

Sete Gibernau and Casey Stoner, both serious title contenders in their respective classes, went through some tough moments during the 2005 campaign.

Seven days after being denied victory by Valentino Rossi in a controversial finale at his home GP in Jerez, Spaniard Sete Gibernau endured another a hard-luck story in Estoril. Gibernau had qualified on the front row alongside poleman Alex Barros, but quickly seized the lead and was on course for a breakaway win when he crashed out, the first victim of the light rain.

While this crash marked the beginning of a luckless campaign for the Honda rider, Casey Stoner also suffered a significant crash, but his came towards the end of the season in Australia and all but ruined his chances of clinching the 250cc title.

The Aussie arrived at Phillip Island having taken two consecutive victories which had allowed him to put the pressure on series leader Dani Pedrosa. After qualifying on pole, Stoner looked set to put on a great performance for his home round, but a high-side on the third lap put an end to his title dream. Pedrosa made the most of the opportunity by clinching victory in a photo-finish with Sebas Porto to secure the title with two rounds to spare.
