Italian GP: Practice

Every week the Re-Live section will give you the opportunity to enjoy highlights of the 17 Grands Prix of the 2005 MotoGP World Championship season. On Saturdays you'll find all the best action from the free practice and qualifying sessions, and on Sundays the best moments from the races. This week, looks back on the Italian GP staged at the popular Mugelli circuit, back in early June.

Valentino Rossi secured the 38th pole position of his career on his home turf at Mugello, demoting Spanish rival Sete Gibernau with a stunning last minute push. The Gauloises Yamaha rider set his fastest time in 1'49.223, beating the previous record of the Tuscany circuit established by Gibernau the previous year.

The front row was completed by a resurgent Max Biaggi, who qualified 0.235 adrift from Rossi. His Repsol Honda team-mate Nicky Hayden took fourth ahead of fellow American John Hopkins on Suzuki. Loris Capirossi was the highest placed Ducati with a sixth position start.

The third row was formed by Marco Melandri – who had lost his last qualifying run by leaving the pits with less than two minutes to go – Carlos Checa and Shinya Nakano. The top ten was completed by Makoto Tamada, who was returning to MotoGP that week after a seven-week layoff due to injury.
