Melandri´s first MotoGP win

In the 2005 Turkey GP, Marco Melandri achieved one of his most long awaited dreams, his first MotoGP victory. The driver from Ravenna would also declare it to be one of the happiest days of his life, and that the victory was more important for him than the 250cc title that he won in 2002. With a majestic performance, the Honda rider racked up a win that placed him as the favourite to be sub-champion, a goal that he would reach days later, securing his second consecutive victory in Valencia.

Melandri completed a memorable and historic race in Istanbul, facing the harassment of Valentino Rossi with an exquisite and energetic drive, with which he deserved to dominate the race from start to finish. The already crowned world champion looked incapable of outbraking his aggressive compatriot, and had to lean against the push of a Melandri who in the final part of the race was clocking up the fastest laps.

With this result Melandri was placing himself in second position in the championship, with a nine point gap between him and Nicky Hayden, and he positioned himself only a step away from closing the book on 2005 with his best season to date. Melandri has as a result become one of the contenders most fancied to knock Rossi off the number one spot in 2006.
