Wayne Gardner returns to the races

Wayne Gardner, 500cc World Champion in 1987, will zip up the competition leathers again this weekend to participate in the 13th edition of the AMCN Island Classic.

Gardner heads a list of some 200 participants. The race will give the Australian the opportunity to compete at Phillip Island for the first time since his two consecutive victories in 1989 and 1990.

The Annual Island Classic offers fans a unique chance to enjoy riders and bikes from Motorcycling history.

"I don´t think there could be a better circuit for my return to the competition. It's got so many good memories for me, plus it's so enjoyable to ride around." Gardner explained.

"When I retired in 1992 I said I'd never race a motorcycle again, but the itch needs scratching. I guess Barry Sheene said the same thing when he retired, and I look at how much fun he had when he returned to racing. That's the main reason I'm doing it - for fun."

The G50 Gardner will ride at the Island is the bike usually raced by World Classic Champion Glen English, and is being air-freighted to Australia specially for the event.
