Edwards wins BMW, Rossi fastest overall at Official Test

On a soaking wet track, Camel Yamaha's Colin Edwards won this year's BMW M Award today at the MotoGP Official Test. Following the win, Sete Gibernau posted the day's fastest time.

The American rider joins teammate Valentino Rossi and Spaniard Sete Gibernau in the list of winners of the prize, having racked up his fastest lap towards the end of the 40 minute session.

After an early fast lap from Briton James Ellison, John Hopkins and Valentino Rossi traded the top spot with the wet track keeping times far off those of previous days. Rossi then took charge, continually improving his times, until a series of crashes left both riders out of the running within a minute of each other. With ten minutes left, the car was still up for grabs, and it would be the Italian's teammate Edwards who would drive it home. The American put in a lap of 1'57.102 with little time remaining at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Whilst the American was fastest in the timed session, reigning World Champion Rossi has dominated the MotoGP Official Test. Fastest overall, he had the nine best laps on Friday and continued to assert himself yesterday, with a quickest lap of 1'42.477.

In the final free practice at the Circuit de Catalunya, only 11 riders elected to continue testing. None improved on their times from the previous, dry sessions.

Sete Gibernau showed why he is regarded as something of a wet weather specialist, taking his new Desmodeci GP6 to the fastest time of the day ahead of Edwards, Roberts, Ellison and Checa, with teammate Loris Capirossi completing a quiet Official Test sixth fastest.

The remaining riders to take to the track were Toni Elias, Tadyoki Okada, Jose Luis Cardoso, Vittoriano Guareschi and Alex Hofmann.

The next MotoGP Official Test takes place in Jerez, with three days of testing starting from next Friday.
