Pirro almost certain absentee for Spanish GP

Michele Pirro is almost certain to miss on the season-opening race in Jerez, as a result of a crash at the very same circuit yesterday.

The WTR Blauer USA rider suffered an extremely hard fall at the hard left-hander before the Ángel Nieto turn of the Andalusian circuit. The young Italian fractured his fibula and injured ligaments in the incident, and was flown to Imola this morning to undergo surgery.

The Clinica Movil on-track medical centre stated how rare this type of injury is in the world of motorbike racing, whilst assigning the rider a long period of recovery. They explained that the injury is very similar to that suffered recently by footballer Fransesco Totti, a sponsor of one of the 125cc teams.

Despite Pirro's desire to be on the track for the Gran Premio betandwin.com de España later this month, Doctor Costa's Clinica Movil experts have almost completely ruled out a return in time for the first race of the 2006 season.
