Pirro K.O. for Jerez

Italian rider Michele Pirro will miss this week's Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez, the first race of the 125cc season.

The WTR Team Blauer USA man suffered a fractured tibia and torn ankle ligaments after a hard crash at the Official Test at the same circuit and, after being taken to a local hospital, underwent surgery in Italy.

"I am crushed about not being able to ride in Jerez," explained the young Italian, who hopes to be back in action for April's Qatar GP. "It was a hard decision to make, but the doctors advised me to wait before getting behind the bars again."

"It's not worth risking a run-out in Jerez, I still don't feel good and it could compromise my season. If I'm there, it will be as a spectator," he added. The team will replace Pirro with the appropriately named Enrique Jerez, a rider who contested five Grandes Prix as a wild card last season.
