How important is the first race of the year?

Valentino Rossi will be aiming to win the first race of the year in the premier-class for the sixth successive season. He has won the World Championship on the five previous occasions where he has stood victorious in the opening round. Looking back over the 57 years of the premier-class of Grand Prix racing that first race has proved to be quite important.

The rider who has won the first race of the year has gone on to win the title on 31 occasions in 57 years.

On 41 occasions the rider who has gone on to take the World Title has finished on the podium at the opening race of the year.

In the last 20 years a rider who has finished on the podium at the first race of the year has gone on to take the world title on 16 occasions. Only twice in the last 20 years has a rider who has failed to score any points in the opening race of the year has gone on to take the world title: Mick Doohan in 1998 and Wayne Rainey in 1992.
