250cc still wide open ahead of Losail challenge

After a runaway victory for Jorge Lorenzo in the first Grand Prix of 2006, the Majorcan now faces the challenge of a track where he finished second last year.

The Fortuna Aprilia rider won't have it easy in Qatar, facing tough riders from Aprilia (Alex de Angelis and team-mate Hector Barbera) and Honda (Andrea Dovizioso, Yuki Takahashi and Shuhei Aoyama) who could all emerge as strong rivals for 250cc's early leader.

There is also guaranteed excitement from some of the preseason's standout riders. Privateers such as Anthony West, Roberto Locatelli and Jakub Smrz will line up alongside riders of the calibre of Hiroshi Aoyama and Marco Simoncelli at the Losail Circuit, scene of the closest Grand Prix finish in history.

One of those out of action for the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar will be experienced Japanese rider Taro Sekiguchi, who fractured his femur once again in the Jerez free practice. Replacing him will be Andrea Ballerini.
