Toni Elias: "The new generation are exceeding expectations"

Toni Elias has become one of the standout riders at the start of the 2006 season, in particular as a result of his near-podium placing ride in Jerez.

The Catalan rider gave an exclusive interview to today, in which he looked ahead to the Grand Prix of Turkey with much excitement. The Istanbul track was the scene of the best result of his 2005 MotoGP debut season.

"It's a circuit that I really like, a really varied track. There are fast and slow sections, inclines and dips…it's fun to ride there and I feel good about it."

"At the moment I'm really comfortable on the bike, despite the fact that we're still in the early stages of the season. It's a situation that would have been unthinkable during preseason, from whence we have progressed to our current level," commented the Fortuna Honda rider. "In any case, I'm still missing the results to show for my hard work. Right now we are in good shape, with good showings in qualifying, but we need to improve a few aspects to keep progressing."

"In Jerez I had the unfortunate incident with Rossi, and in Qatar we had a few problems. They were unforeseen situations, so we just have to hope that nothing like that happens in the next few races, and that I can show how at home I am on this bike."

Elias has emerged alongside other young riders Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa as one of the big surprises of the 2006 season so far.

"I don't think anyone was expecting it," commented the Spaniard. "Obviously the new generation of MotoGP riders was going to arrive one day, playing more of a role in the championship. You always have to respect the big names in the category, but I think that the current situation is really positive and that we are exceeding all expectations."
