Stoner misses out on record

Casey Stoner was within grasping distance of his first victory in MotoGP last weekend, a triumph that would have placed him in the record books as the joint youngest premier class winner, alongside Freddie Spencer.

The Honda LCR rider would have equalled Spencer's record to the day, at 20 years and 196 days old, earned in Belgium in 1992.

Next week he has a new goal in sight. Stoner can still overtake Norick Abe as the second youngest winner, and will be out to do so in Shangai where he won in 250cc last year.

Stoner stepped onto the MotoGP podium for the first time in Istanbul, and climbed to fourth in the championship.
