2006 Rookie Review

The past three races of the season have given a group of young riders the chance to show their potential in the World Championship. Casey Stoner, Marco Simoncelli and Bradley Smith are the top rookies in their respective class at the moment.

Stoner has a pole position and a podium place to his name, and has not finished lower than sixth this season. He is already showing all the skills necessary for a successful MotoGP rider.

Simoncelli has joined the Gilera 250cc team, in a category more suited to his stature and build. The Italian occupies twelfth spot in the championship despite finishing outside the points in Jerez. In Turkey he earned the highest qualification position for Gilera since Carlos Lavado in 1992.

Despite not placing in the points in any race thus far, Bradley Smith has demonstrated his riding talent already in 2006. He was the highest finishing rookie in both Jerez and Losail, although a crash in Turkey left him suffering his first setback of the season
