Criville takes first rally victory

Accompanied by a comfortable spring climate, with sun and warm temperatures, and a large turnout of spectators, the Spanish National Rally played host to an extraordinary occasion in Ourense. Former 500cc and 125cc Champion Alex Criville and Joan Vinyes were involved in a tight battle for the four wheel victory.

Criville started the final section a second behind his rival, but at the final stage he put in a great time nearly nine seconds faster than last year. Criville took home his first win and podium in the championship in only his second season of rallying.

"It was really gratifying to taste victory again," said the Spaniard. "This morning I was really nervous ahead of the start, and I was worrying about the tyre choices and car settings. I knew that it was a difficult rally, very risky. What I hadn't imagined was that I would be involved in such a close fight with a driver as good as Joan Vinyes. I still have a lot to learn, and I have to thank my co-driver Kini Muntada and the whole Baporo team."
