Motorshow arrives in Barcelona for Cobas tribute

Today sees the start of the Gran Semana de la Moto in Barcelona, a show devoted to the world of two-wheel sport with over 200 exhibitions.

One of this year's biggest attractions is a homage to Spanish technician Antonio Cobas, considered one of the greatest engineers in international motorcycling.

In a 450m2 space, visitors will be able to see some of the late technician's finest bikes. From his first model, the 250cc Siroco created in 1978, up to the recent Honda RC211V.

Alongside the exhibition there will be a presentation of a revised biography, remembering Cobas' role in the World Championship. An additional chapter includes friends such as Angel Nieto and Sito Pons paying tribute, and a new photograph section. Antonio Cobas put together his own team, with which Alex Criville was proclaimed 125cc World Champion in 1989. At the start of his career he lent support to Sito Pons and also to riders such as Alberto Puig and Carlos Checa.

Cobas became a key figure in the paddock and continued working in the Honda Pons team until 2003. Criville said that "to me he was a unique engineer and an innovator, who did a thousand and one things that later worked on the track."
