Espargaro on road to recovery

Aleix Espargaro will find out this Friday if Aleix Espargaro will play any part in the sixth race of the 125cc season in Mugello. The Barcelona rider suffered a crash during the first day of practice last week in Le Mans, damaging a vertebra in that left him out of the race. The ex-Spanish Champion spoke to this week, explaining that there were initial fears over the extent of the victory.

"At first it scared me, because in the first examination they told me that it could have been a fracture or something more serious. Then in Barcelona they explained that it had been a collapse, and we could all breathe a relative sigh of relief.

Espargaro was visited in Barcelona by specialist Xavier Mir, who diagnosed a trauma to the sternum and a torn intercostal after a radiograph. This week the Spaniard undertook a complete rest and used a chest cast, a process which he referred to as "extremely boring." But recognised that "the less I move the sooner I will recover."

After taking part in the first Grands Prix of 2006, Espargaro is still searching for his first points of the season. He puts this down to bad luck and encountering a lot of problems.

"In Turkey I got injured and of course in France I couldn't race because of the crash. It's a pity because the team have had a lot of faith in me and I hope that from now things go better for us."

"This season the level of competition is very high. Aprilia have also come on leaps and bounds and they are really strong. In any case, Luthi won in Le Mans with a Honda and that gives us confidence."
