Simon takes provisional pole whilst Smith shines

Julian Simon braved the driving rain at the Mugello Circuit to put himself on provisional pole for Sunday's 125cc Gran Premio d'Italia Alice, whilst British rookie Bradley Smith scored his highest placing to date.

Simon's time of 2'15.953 put him ahead of shock second placed rider Michele Pirro and Karel Abraham. Fabrizio Lai rounds off the provisional front row ahead of Mika Kallio and Alvaro Bautista.

Bradley Smith's eighth place sees the 15 year old on a temporary second row, something he would be more than happy to hold onto for Sunday's race.

At the end of the session the sun made a brief appearance, drying out the track a little for the final minutes ahead of the second MotoGP practice session.
