Fourth win for Fortuna Aprilia
With six races contested, Jorge Lorenzo has taken three wins after his impressive performance in Mugello, that became also the fourth victory for Fortuna Aprilia squad, after Barbera clinched the triumph at Shanghai.
Lorenzo brought an end to his recent poor form – three races without a win and two without scoring –to return to the top step of the podium in Mugello. Starting from pole, Lorenzo got away well and was in the lead group of seven riders although he chose to let his rivals fight it out at the front. Having carefully studied his options he then chose the ideal moment to make his move, edging ahead of Alex de Angelis on the very final corner to win by the narrowest of margins. Lorenzo now moves into second in the championship ahead of the next round in Catalunya.
Jorge Lorenzo, 1st – 2nd in Championship, 88 points
"The best way to end a bad run is by winning. I had a few problems at the start of the weekend, although I resolved them yesterday and managed to take pole. Now I have won the race and returned to the top step of the podium which I am very happy about. I wanted to put the races in Turkey, China and France behind me as quickly as possible and I have done so and still have plenty of time to make up the 20-point gap in the championship. It was a hard race in which it was impossible to get away so I began to think about the best way to win it. My strategy worked to perfection as I was the fastest rider in the final section of the circuit. I want to thank everyone who has supported me even when we weren't having the luck."
Hector Barbera, DNF – 4th in Championship, 78 points
"I am sad because all of our work this weekend was thrown away in just one moment. It was a real shame, but the only thing to do is look forward. I did the sighting lap without any problems, but then when the race started we had engine problems. The mechanics are searching for what went wrong but everyone is annoyed we didn't get the chance to show the excellent rhythm we had found during qualifying. I think we would have been in the lead group, but this time luck was not on our side."
