Pesek makes Czech motorcycling history once again

Lukas Pesek put himself in the Czech motorcycling history books once again in Mugello, earning the first pole for his country in the World Championship. It was also Derbi racing's first pole since the 2004 Qatar GP, where Jorge Lorenzo clocked the fastest time in qualifying.

Pesek wasn't able to top the weekend off with a win, but his second podium of the season puts him in second overall.

The Czech's first rostrum finish at the opening race in Jerez was also historic, as the second place gave the country their first podium since Bohumil Stasa 37 years before.

"There was too much strategy. Too many things were going through my head on the last lap, I made a small mistake when turning and Pasini made the most of it to escape by three or four metres, which proved decisive," explained Pesek at the end of the race. "It will help me in future and I am sure that I won't make the same mistake again. In any case, I'm happy because I was on pole, it was a competitive race and I was on the podium."
