Barbera out of Catalunya race after breaking wrist

Fortuna Aprilia rider Hector Barbera is out of the Gran Premio de Catalunya, having suffered a fracture to his right wrist yesterday whilst training on a mountain bike. He will undergo surgery today at the Institut Dexeus de Barcelona, with the introduction of a titanium plate and screws to the injury in order to ensure the correct healing process.

The setback occurred yesterday, when the Spaniard was riding through the mountainous area around Alcoy in his homeland.

"I arrived from London on Wednesday to undergo some physical tests in Sant Cugat. I was at home with my parents ahead of the journey to Barcelona and decided to go out on my bicycle. I fell and when I was trying to break my fall I fractured my wrist. It is the first broken bone that I've ever had, and I do it at one of the most important moments of my life ahead of three consecutive Grands Prix. It's a setback, but I am focused on my recovery and getting back on the bike as soon as possible," stated Barbera.

One of the main contenders for the 250cc title, the Valencian rider will miss both his home Grand Prix in Montmelo and the A-Style TT Assen in Holland.
