Dovizioso takes maiden 250cc victory in Catalunya spectacular

Andrea Dovizioso took his long-awaited first 250cc victory in Catalunya, after a heart-stopping final few laps. The clearly delighted Humangest Honda rider held off home rider Jorge Lorenzo and Master MVA Aspar rider Alex de Angelis to head the quarter litre category for the first time.

After a slow start, Lorenzo broke through strongly at the end of the race, chasing down the front three with precious little time remaining. Second place on the podium completes a fantastic two races for the Spaniard, who won last time round in Mugello.

Alex de Angelis lead the pack early on, and was fighting for the win until the last lap, where he dropped back slightly as Dovizioso battle with his Spanish adversary.

Roberto Locatelli was desperately unlucky not to take home the victory, running wide whilst under pressure. The popular Italian dropped down to fourth after his off-track excursion, but was still able to finish an impressive fourth.

A late addition to the 250cc line-up, Alex Debon had been outstanding in practice and qualifying, standing in for injured Fortuna Aprilia rider Hector Barbera. Starting from the front row, the substitute rider earned many plaudits for his fifth place ride.

Hiroshi Aoyama completed the top six positions, ahead of Yuki Takahashi, Sylvain Guintoli, Anthony West and Martin Cardenas.

Dovizioso now holds a 25 point advantage over Lorenzo in the overall classification, and with his top three finish matches Max Biaggi's record of seven podium finishes from the first seven races of the season.
