Dunlop take best results of the season in Montmelo

The Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya heralded the best results of the year for Dunlop in MotoGP, with a particularly noteworthy performance for Carlos Checa at his home circuit.

Catalan rider Checa finished eighth on the Sunday race, although he admitted that the race was a little different to what he had expected.

" Firstly, this was a strange race, especially with so many riders crashing together at the first corner. My first concern was that none of them were seriously injured.

I got away well at the restart, and after a few laps felt increasingly confident on the bike and could increase my pace, and had a good battle with Tamada. I was quicker than him in the last corner, but I hadn't quite enough acceleration to pass him on the main straight. I managed to pass him once, but he came back at me immediately.

Most importantly, my tyre performance was good and consistent right to the end of the race. We have never finished closer to the winner than we did today, and this is the first race where I can definitely feel we have made real progress. I look forward to Dunlop and Yamaha giving me more of the same next week at Assen !"

Guy Coulon, Checa's race engineer was equally positive: "This was definitely our best race of the season to date. Carlos finished only 31 seconds behind race winner Rossi. Not only did he battle with Tamada throughout the race, but at the end of the race only Rossi and Hayden were lapping quicker than him – which clearly demonstrates our tyre consistency."

Herve Poncharal, Tech 3 Yamaha Dunlop's team manager underlined the work that Carlos Checa has done since the last GP: "The day after the race in Mugello, we stayed for a very good test, and came to Barcelona knowing that we were capable of running a strong race pace. Carlos did a very good race simulation on Saturday in practice, and also had a strong warm-up on Sunday morning. This good race performance clearly shows the progress that Dunlop and the team have made – and don't forget, this is only the seventh race of the season."

Other riders to finish the race for the tyre factory were James Ellison, Alex Hofmann and Jose Luis Cardoso.
