Donington 2005: Simon takes maiden 125cc win

Julian Simon took his first 125cc GP win at a rain-drenched and interrupted betandwin.com British GP at Donington Park last year. The Spaniard finished ahead of Kopron Racing World pair Mike di Meglio and Fabrizio Lai. Marco Simoncelli came in fourth ahead of Pablo Nieto, Thomas Luthi and poleman Mika Kallio.

Joan Olivé, local wild card rider Dan Linfoot and Toshihisa Kuzuhara completed the top ten.

Chaos ensued at as rain forced the race to be red-flagged after just eight laps. Race leader Alvaro Bautista was able to restart from the front despite crashing out on lap 8.

The race got back underway under wet conditions and an intense shower to complete nine laps. Pasini fell during the second warm-up lap, whilst Kallio had to settle for the last place on the grid as he had left the pits too late to join the pre-grid. Gabor Talmacsi rejoined the race after a crash and was eventually forced to retire.

Bautista and team-mate Aleix Espargaró crashed in pursuit of new leader Mike di Meglio, allowing Simon to chase for the win. With two laps to go, the Spaniard overtook the Frenchman and opened up a decisive gap to reach the chequered flag in first place.
