The racing in the MotoGP class this season has been more unpredictable than for many years, with a mix of riders, constructors and tyre manufacturers challenging at the front of the grid and for the podium positions at each race. Some statistics illustrating this from the first eight races of 2006:

• Five different riders have already been victorious so far this year; Nicky Hayden, Dani Pedrosa, Loris Capirossi, Valentino Rossi, Marco Melandri.

• Nine different riders have appeared on the podium; Nicky Hayden, Dani Pedrosa, Loris Capirossi, Valentino Rossi, Marco Melandri, Casey Stoner, Colin Edwards, Shinya Nakano, Kenny Roberts.

• Five different constructors have been represented on the podium; Honda, Yamaha, Ducati, Kawasaki, KR211V.

• Seven different riders have started from pole position during 2006; Dani Pedrosa, Loris Capirossi, Valentino Rossi, Casey Stoner, John Hopkins, Sete Gibernau, Chris Vermeulen. Dani Pedrosa is the only rider who has had two pole positions.

• Four different manufacturers have had riders start from pole position; Yamaha, Honda, Ducati, Suzuki.

• Michelin and Bridgestone have each had four pole positions during 2006.

• Twelve different riders have started from the front row in the first eight races of the year; Dani Pedrosa, Loris Capirossi, Valentino Rossi, Casey Stoner, John Hopkins, Sete Gibernau, Chris Vermeulen, Nicky Hayden, Colin Edwards, Shinya Nakano, Kenny Roberts, Toni Elias.
