Kallio: "Anything is possible"

Although trailing his title rival Alvaro Bautista by 52 points, Finnish rider Mika Kallio still occupies second place in the 125cc World Championship. The Red Bull KTM man gave an exclusive interview to motogp.com this week, evaluating his season so far and his title chances.

What is your overall reflection of the first half of the 2006 season?

All in all, pretty good. Generally speaking, we can be happy with everything except for my two retirements; in Turkey due to a mechanical problem and in Catalunya as part of an early group of crashers. In both cases there was nothing that I could do. I also had some bad luck at Mugello, when I lost my knee slider and couldn't fight for the victory. Many times I have been the only rider to finish ahead of the Aprilias, which shows that myself and KTM are doing a good job. After the winter break I will be looking forward to my team-mate Julian Simon's return, with our two orange bikes at the head of the pack.

Alvaro Bautista is certainly a consistent and tough rival. Does the points difference between the two of you cause any worry?

Alvaro had the perfect start to the season and has continued to add points to the board. It will be difficult to make up the disadvantage unless he has some bad luck. Bautista took 45 points from the two races in which I was forced to retire. He's also in a great team and I'm convinced that some of his team-mates won't take points away from him in the next few races.

The Aprilia bikes are on form this season. Will KTM be introducing new parts for the second half of the season?

It's pretty clear that Aprilia are a little ahead of ourselves and the rest of the factories, especially at the start of the season. However, after the first few races we have been able to match their speed, so I am confident about the rest of the season. Last week we undertook two days of tests in Brno, and we found some solutions in the suspension and the new chassis. We have made progress, so I hope that we can also get faster.

How do you see the next few circuits on the calendar?

I am totally convinced that we will have the chance to challenge for the win in every race from now. Glancing ahead, the races ahead of us are all ones in which we did well last year. I took 151 points and four victories from the seven races in 2005. So I'm not ruling anything out, anything is possible.
