Despite suffering from a fractured collarbone, Marco Melandri was Friday's fastest rider with a best time of 1'23.145, breaking the circuit record by more than half a second. The Italian pipped Dani Pedrosa to the top spot by three tenths of a second on the final lap.

Third fastest was Loris Capirossi, part of a top eight who all went round in under 1'24. Joining him were Nicky Hayden, Kenny Roberts Jr, John Hopkins, Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner. Sete Gibernau and MakotoTamada completed the top ten.

The second practice session saw a hard fall for Randy de Puniet, a run-off by Valentino Rossi and a crash from Jose Luis Cardoso.
